Multi-Dimensional Modeling of the Effects of Split Injection Scheme on Combustion and Emissions of Direct-Injection Diesel Engines at Full Load State

Authors

Abstract:

One of the important problems in reducing pollutant emission from diesel engines is trade-off between soot and NOx. Split injection is one of the most powerful tools that decrease soot and NOx emissions simultaneously. At the present work, the effect of split injection on the combustion process and emissions of a direct-injection diesel engine under full-load conditions is investigated by the commercial CFD code AVL-FIRE. The study of injection timing and split injection parameters, including the delay dwell and the fuel quantity injected between injection pulses is carried out. Three different split injection schemes, in which 10-20-25 % of total fuel is injected in the second pulse, have been considered. The results show that 25 % of total fuel injected in the second pulse, reduces the total soot and NOx emissions effectively in DI diesel engines. In addition, the optimum delay dwell between the pulses is about 25°CA. The predicted values of combustion process, emission and delay dwell by this CFD model show a good agreement with the corresponding data of multi-zone phenomenological combustion model in the literature.

Multi-Dimensional Modeling of the Effects of Spilt Injection Scheme on Performance and Emissions of IDI Diesel Engines

One of the important problems in reducing of pollutant emission from DI and IDI diesel engines is trade-off  between soot and NOx. Split injection is one of the most powerful tools that makes the chance to shift the trade-off curve closer to origin.  At the present work, the effect of split injection on the combustion process and emissions of a cylinder IDI diesel engine under the specification...

Combustion Modeling for Modern Direct Injection Diesel Engines

In order to comply with stringent pollutant emissions regulations, a detailed analysis of the engine combustion and emission is required. In this field, computational tools like CFD and engine cycle simulation play a fundamental role. Therefore, the goal of the present work is to simulate a high speed DI diesel engine and study the combustion and major diesel engine emissions with more deta...

The Effect of Split Injection on the Combustion and Emissions in DI and IDI Diesel Engines

The major pollutants from diesel engines are NOx and soot. NOx and soot emissions are of concerns to the international community. They have been judged to pose a lung cancer hazard for humans as well as elevating the risk of non-cancer respiratory ailments. These emissions react in the atmosphere in the presence of sunlight to form ground-level ozone. Ground-level ozone is a major component of ...

Three-Dimensional Modeling of Combustion Process, Soot and NOx formation In a Direct-injection Diesel Engine

This paper is presented to study the combustion process and emissions in a direct injection diesel engine. Computations are carried out using a three-dimensional model for flows, sprays, combustion and emissions in Diesel engines. Interactions between combustion and emissions with flow field are considered and it is shown that soot mass fraction increases at regions with low turbulence inten...

Three Dimensional Modeling of Combustion Process and Emissions Formationin Pre and Main Chambers of an Idirect Injection Diesel Enginge

The combustion processes and emission formation in pre and main chambers of a Lister 8.1 IDI diesel are simulated with the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code. The model includes spray atomization, mixture formation and distribution and subsequently the combustion processes and emissions formation modeling are carried out with considering of flow configurations in two chambers. A part load ...
